Winter feels like it’s finally here in Wisconsin and with more snow expected tomorrow, now is the time to prepare for the winter ahead. We’ve brought you home, car and pet safety tips below to ensure your winter is safe and warm.

  • Pack a winter emergency kit. For both home and car, it’s a great idea to have a winter emergency kit ready at all times.
    • For your home, include indoor candles, matches and batteries in case of a power shortage. Be sure to have non-perishable food, water bottles and blankets should an emergency last longer than expected.
    • For your car, have snow boots, extra blankets, road flares, a tool kit and a flashlight available in case of a roadside emergency.
    • Make sure you have important and emergency phone numbers taped inside both of your kits.
    • A small first-aid kit can help with any minor medical emergencies that may occur because of or after a winter emergency.
  • Make sure to keep your pipes from freezing.
    • Wrap your exposed outdoor pipes with insulation to slow heat transfer.
    • Keep cabinet doors open to circulate warm air around pipes.
    • Be sure to keep your thermostat on if you leave town.
    • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets connected to pipes that run through an unheated or unprotected space.
    • Carefully use a roof rake to remove snow from the roof edge.
  • Prevent and clean ice dams in your gutters. With ice build ups, any water that drains off the roof could end up inside your home.
    • Any fall debris such as leaves should be cleared from the gutters.
    • Keep attics well-ventilated so snow doesn’t melt and freeze on the roof’s edge.
    • Make sure the attic floor is well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising through the attic from within the house.
  • Keep your pet’s paws clean after walks.
    • Many sidewalks are treated with de-icer. These chemicals can irritate the skin so wash dog paws after they’ve been outside.
  • Keep your driveway and sidewalks shoveled and salted.
    • Consider hiring a student or using a volunteer service if you are physically unable to shovel and salt.
    • Wear boots with no-slip/no-skid rubber soles.
    • Use an ergonomically-correct model with a curved handle to avoid injury or fatigue.
    • Salt your steps, patios and walkways to keep ice at bay.

These winter tips should help keep you and your homes safer, warmer and drier this winter.  Be sure to contact your Shorewest, REALTOR® to get in touch with most trusted services for any home repairs you face this winter or any time of year.
